Quoting ekwhine:
Thanks for sharing. Way too often riders are not educated on saddle fit. Sitting in one too small will throw your seat and balance off. I think most riders who will ride a seat too small is because it gives them a sense of security. The people I work with don't get a saddle for a while. I like for them to first learn feel and balance first. I lead my horse or theirs if suitable, with them with a bareback pad. Just a walk, have them do exercises and feel where the horses feet are. Been doing that for over forty years now. What I learned from my grandmother. ekwhine A friend asked me to suggest a bit for her horse, a mare, that would control her. The mare was getting really bad about bolting, and had recently dumped my friend by getting out from under her.running thru the leverage bit that was on her. The mare was going up for sale and wanted something so a person could take her out for a ride. When I got there, I asked that the mare be put in the round pen just so I could watch her. I asked to see the bit they were using on her. I then asked to have the saddle the mare was ridden with put on the mare, minus the saddle pad. It didn't take long to find the problem was not the bit but the saddle fit. I had my friend run her hand under the saddle from front to back on both sides. The saddle was really pinching behind the withers. I was then asked if more padding would help the saddle fit better. I told her not any more than putting on thicker socks would help shoes fit better that were too tight. I loaned her one of my saddles, I have several, until she could get one that fit the mare and had her put the mare in a three piece broken snaffle so she could teach the mare to give her head. I showed her the mare was very resistant with giving her head with the leverage bit. Her kids now ride the mare and love her. Love a happy ending.
